African Grey Parrot*
- Psittacus Erithacus Erithacus
- The African grey parrot is recognizable by its dark grey feathers along its back and wings, a light grey vent, and red tail.
- They inhabit tropical rainforests of western equatorial Africa where their range overlaps that of the African oil palm which makes up a large portion of its diet.
- Captive parrots have been used to show the intelligence of this species by means of problem solving, leading to the belief that they have the mentality of a three year old child.
- Even though their numbers in the wild are high and they are listed by the IUCN as a species of least concern, grey parrots are still threatened by overexploitation for the pet trade and loss of habitat due to deforestation.
