Eastern Screech Owl*
- Otus Asio
- This small owl is recognizable by its large tufted ears and its variable color morph of either red or gray.
- They inhabit woodlands bordering clear open fields for hunting across the United States.
- Screech owls begin nesting in March in natural trees cavities; females lay 3-7 eggs that hatch after an incubation of about 25 days.
- Owls are expert nocturnal hunters because they have excellent low-light vision and asymmetrical ears that help them localize sounds made by prey.
- They are protected under the Migratory Bird Act.
