Golden Lion Tamarin
- Leontopithecus rosalia
- Golden lion tamarins are entirely gold, reddish, or buff in color. Bodies average 8 to 13 inches in length, with the tail adding an additional 12 to 15 inches. An adult weighs about 1 ½-2 lbs.
- They are found in primary tropical forests, secondary forests and areas under partial cultivation in Brazil.
- Their diet consists of insects and fruit, but they also eat spiders, snails, small lizards, birds' eggs, small birds and plant juices.
- The name "lion" refers to the mane on the tamarin's cheeks, throat and ears.
- Golden lion tamarins have a tendency to give birth to twins.
- Due to nearly 30 years of conservation efforts including captive breeding, genetic management, community education, and habitat restoration, golden lion tamarins were down-listed to endangered from critically endangered.
- To date, twelve golden lion tamarins have been born at the Palm Beach Zoo!
