Golden Lion Tamarin

Golden Lion Tamarin
Leontopithecus rosalia
Golden lion tamarins are entirely gold, reddish, or buff in color. Bodies average 8 to 13 inches in length, with the tail adding an additional 12 to 15 inches. An adult weighs about 1 ½-2 lbs.
They are found in primary tropical forests, secondary forests and areas under partial cultivation in Brazil.
Their diet consists of insects and fruit, but they also eat spiders, snails, small lizards, birds' eggs, small birds and plant juices.
The name "lion" refers to the mane on the tamarin's cheeks, throat and ears.
Golden lion tamarins have a tendency to give birth to twins.
Due to nearly 30 years of conservation efforts including captive breeding, genetic management, community education, and habitat restoration, golden lion tamarins were down-listed to endangered from critically endangered.
To date, twelve golden lion tamarins have been born at the Palm Beach Zoo!
