Hyacinth Macaw*

Anodorhynchus Hyacinthinus
Easily distinguished from the other macaw species at the zoo, this bird has a rather large beak surrounded by yellow flesh and its entire body covered in royal blue feathers.
They are the largest macaws and the world's largest flying parrots with a total length of nearly 4 feet and a wingspan of 5 feet.
They are native to the tropical forests of Central and South America where they forage for nuts and berries in the forest canopy.
In 2000 they were listed by the IUCN as endangered and are classified as such due to the small remaining populations undergoing rapid decrease due to the overexploitation for the pet trade and deforestation.
