Laughing Kookaburra
Dacelo novaeguineae
This large member of the kingfisher family measures 40 - 45 cm in length and has a chuckling voice that gives this species its name.
Laughing kookaburras feed mostly on insects, worms and crustaceans and occasionally small snakes, mammals, frogs and birds.
They inhabit most areas where there are suitable trees throughout eastern Australia. They have been introduced to Tasmania and the extreme south-west of Western Australia, as well as New Zealand.
This bird is considered common in Australia.
