Military Macaw

Easily distinguished from the other macaw species at the zoo, this bird is mainly green with a red patch between the eyes and blue-green flight and tail feathers.
They are relatively large birds with body lengths of 36 inches and wingspan of almost four feet.
They are native to the tropical forests of Central and South America where they forage for nuts and berries in the forest canopy.
These birds congregate in flocks of 100 or more individuals while pairs within the group that mate for life tend to fly close together.
They have been classified by the IUCN as vulnerable since 1994.
