- These graceful hunters are native to the eastern United States where they inhabit deciduous and coniferous stands.
- They are fairly large broad winged hawks with reddish secondary wing coverts; females are slightly larger than males.
- They are monogamous and territorial with males courting potential mates by performing an acrobatic "sky dance".
- They are protected under the Migratory Bird Act.
