Roseate Spoonbill

Ajaia ajaja
Roseate spoonbills live in coastal areas and offshore islands from Florida to Northern South America.
Having a very long bill that is shaped like a spoon, these birds move their beaks back and forth under the water’s surface to catch prey.
Their diet consists of small fish, plant material, amphibians, aquatic amphibians, insects and crustaceans. Carotenoid –rich food give the spoonbill their beautiful pink feather color.
Roseate spoonbills were nearly hunted to extinction during the 1800s. Their striking pink feathers were popular on women's hats. Today the roseate spoonbill is a threatened species because of habitat loss.
