Seba's Short-tailed Bat
- Carollia Perspicillata
- Being a nocturnal species, short-tailed bats are active foragers of fruits during the evening hours retreating to caves once daylight hits.
- The fleshy leaf-shaped disk on the nose of this bat species is used for echolocation to navigate the forests in dark conditions.
- They are native to South and Central America where they are found in moist evergreen and deciduous forests.
- This species is an important seed disperser for fruiting trees, particularly plants of the black pepper plant family.
- They have been observed to go into torpor, a state of decreased metabolism much like a brief hibernation, when conditions are poor.
