Southern Black Howler Monkey

- Southern black howler monkeys are found in tropical and deciduous forests of central South America including northern Argentina, Bolivia, southern Brazil, and Paraguay.
- Males of this species are black, while females are tan-brown, and juveniles are golden which fades as they mature.
- A strong prehensile tail equipped with a hairless underside allows this species the sensitivity and dexterity of a fifth limb.
- The mating habits of these social animals are promiscuous among the 3-19 individuals of a group.
- The name howler monkey comes from the roars that this animal makes to advertise itself using an enlarged hyoid and larynx at the base of the throat that form an echo chamber.
