Sulphur-crested Cockatoo*
- Cacatua Galerita
- This bird lives in large numbers in northern and eastern Australia where it inhabits tropical and subtropical rainforests.
- Preening each other, erecting of the crest, bobbing of the head, and swaying the head side to side are all signs of courtship in this monogamous species.
- Lifespan in the wild averages 40 years, but in captivity they have been known to live as much as 120 years.
- They feed on seeds, nuts, fruits, flowers, and insects which they collect in the tree canopies and disperse in excrement.
- When feeding in large groups, "sentinel" birds remain on the outskirts of the group to watch for predators such as owls and monitors.
