Virginia Opossum
- Didelphis Virginiana
- The Virginia opossum is the only marsupial native to North America ranging from Mexico to Canada.
- Large specimens can reach 14 pounds and lengths of three feet including their prehensile tail.
- Birth occurs 12-14 days after copulation with litters averaging 7-9 offspring that remain in the fur-lined pouch until they reach about 100 days old.
- Most opossums do not live past 18 months; the oldest known specimen in the wild lived to be 3 years old.
